Gouves
Gouves is located 19 kilometers east of Heraklion Crete and 16 kilometers from Kazantzakis Heraklion International Airport. Gouves is a large area, including the well known town resort of Kato Gouves, by the Aegean sea and the traditional village of Ano Gouves, which is built under the side of the small mountain Ederi with breathtaking views. The name Gouves is derived from the Greek word “gouva,” which means ‘’a hollow in the earth’’. Since the 2011, local government reform it is part of the municipality Hersonissos, of which it is a municipal unit. In the past, the valley of Kato Gouves was cultivated by the residents of the village Ano Gouves with vegetables, olives and cereals; today harvests have given their place to hotels beach bars and tourism. In contrary to the neighboring crowded resorts Malia and Hersonissos, The village offers quiet holidays, perfect for families with kids and elderly people. Here you will find mostly families that appreciate the excellent sandy beaches, close to all necessary facilities.
Kato Gouves is a traditional Cretan Village and in the meantime a worldwide famous tourism destination. The village is a beautiful, quite and romantic place which will satisfy every one of your desires. There is a variety of accommodation, from large five star hotels to motels, boarding houses and self-catering apartments, and there are numerous restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and shops. Apart from these, on the main road of the village, you will find several super markets, convenient stores, shops, pharmacy, dentist, and many ATMs.
