One of the best beaches in Malia is Potamos beach which is very close to the main beach of Malia and just 300 metres from Malia Archaeological Site, the Minoan Palace of Malia, so a great place to cool off after a visit. The beach got its name from the river that flows into the eastern side of the beach.
Potamos is a family beach, chosen by those who want to avoid the noisy beaches in Malia. It is a long beach at around 700 meters long with sand and clear waters. The water is perfectly clean and colourful, Some rocks are creating a small lake next to the beach which is organised but it also offers enough free space for activities and shower facilities. The beach is managed by DAMAL SA, which is responsible for the hiring of sunbeds and equipment.
There are lots of sunbeds available that cost 7 euros for 2 sunbeds and one umbrella but you can also lie on your towel at no cost. An important feature is that there is a lifeguard for more safety. Potamos beach is where the locals go so it is better to go during the week as it gets crowded during the weekends. There is a canteen wagon where you can find fresh food, beers and beverages and one restaurant in a walking distance.
Potamos beach is easy to reach by KTEL buses from Hersonissos for just 1.80 euros. The taxi from Malia to Potamos is 8-10 Euro. Sissi is just 3 kilometres from Potamos, and you can even rent a bicycle to go to the beach. The distance from Gouves to Potamos beach is about 20 minutes by car.
